I think Discovery channel (or was it PBS...) took a look back and since Nixon, every president has had less foreign dependence as a stated energy goal. Obviously, it is not easy to do. Oil is a wonderfully useful /efficient fuel that currently does not have serious competition. I think the top 2 countries we import oil from are Canada and Mexico.

Then perhaps oil should stop being traded. Of course basing it on the US Dollar doesn't help.

We rely on Canucks and people to the south....but I get your point.
