If that's the position and the other side is going to use kids, you simply end up with a lot of dead kids and a lot of dead soldiers on your side. Why is it the case that when you become a soldier you give up the right to defend yourself?

YES, you do shoot a child under circumstances, although extremely rare. If a brainwashed child is walking into a crowd of people about to kill and injure dozens of adults and children, you are just supposed to shrug your shoulders and ignore? I don't think so.

I do not live in an Israeli checkpoint and there are no Palestinian children in my neighborhood. I dont even own a gun.
