NYC TV station sued over erroneous lottery numbers - WSJ.com (http://online.wsj.com/article/AP5339f007d5ce4bdbb096a0ecf5c4c820.html - broken link)
A New Jersey woman who mistakenly thought she had won $250,000 in the Mega Millions lottery has sued a New York City television station, claiming she was "devastated" after learning it had twice broadcast the wrong winning numbers.

Good to know you can sue for being "devastated".
I wonder how many people in Japan would be suing right now.
All lottery tickets have a disclaimer on the back that clearly states you should contact the state's lottery commission/department to verify if it is a winner. This suit will most likely be thrown out. If for some bizarre reason the woman wins the initial suit, the ruling will be reversed on appeal.

And people wonder why the lottery is a "tax on the stupid"?
The suit almost certainly has no merit, but I don't blame her for being very angry with the TV station. If I had thought I just won millions of dollars, only to find out I hadn't because the newscaster made a mistake, that would be pretty harsh.

She has no case, but I sympathize with her state of being "bummed out". As someone had already pointed out, she needs to read the fine print on her ticket/receipt.
