this is what happens when you build a nuclear facility right on a very active earthquake zone, right on the coastline prone to tsunami..

The scary part is that governments heavily subsidize the nuclear power industry to the point that you have to wonder how much safety is compromised by bureaucrats calling the shots.

Private industry bureaurocrats will always comprimise safety in the name of profit.

PS: that explosion was caused by a hydrogen gas buildup in the building outside of the reactor.

One enables the other.
So long as the same crooked and incompetent government continually provides them with safety nets to shield them from being held accountable, you would be correct.

For once I agree with you. Neither the private nor public sectors should be shielded from responsibility for the damages done due to their mistakes.

However these reactors were built to the accepted standards of the time. So far they have been damaged but the primary safety systems are operating. The reactor contents have not escaped from the primary containment in their pressure vessels. So far the predictions of a major release are pure hysteria I expect from journalists. Even CNN is selling fear not fact.

I'm as against nuclear power as many of you, but you guys really need to stop with the hysteria.

There were no harmful levels of radiation emitted into the air.

Please read this article for a lay-person's level explanation of what has happened so far, and why it isn't a danger.

Fukushima Nuclear Accident – a simple and accurate explanation « BraveNewClimate
"There is a second type of radioactive material created, outside the fuel rods. The big main difference up front: Those radioactive materials have a very short half-life, that means that they decay very fast and split into non-radioactive materials. By fast I mean seconds. So if these radioactive materials are released into the environment, yes, radioactivity was released, but no, it is not dangerous, at all. Why? By the time you spelled “R-A-D-I-O-N-U-C-L-I-D-E”, they will be harmless, because they will have split up into non radioactive elements."

. . .

Some radiation was released when the pressure vessel was vented. All radioactive isotopes from the activated steam have gone (decayed). A very small amount of Cesium was released, as well as Iodine. If you were sitting on top of the plants’ chimney when they were venting, you should probably give up smoking to return to your former life expectancy. The Cesium and Iodine isotopes were carried out to the sea and will never be seen again."
I'm perfectly willing to acknowledge that there may yet become dangerous radioactive emissions, but as of yet, that hasn't happened.
