As governments get bigger and more powerful, they can do whatever they want to do. Here is an example of paying people more to work for the government than in the private sector. And then they wonder why their taxes and cost of living are so high.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Table 4 shows average [monthly] earnings, for 2013, in California for a full-time state-and-local employee are $6,190. No other state even breaks the $6,000 barrier.

The national average was $4,603. That means California’s average earnings for state-and-local workers of $6,190 was 34 percent above the national average.

But doesn’t California have the highest median income per capita? No. It’s only 15th (for 2012), at $44,980. That’s just 5 percent above the national median income of $42,693.

To recapitulate: California’s state-and-local government workers make 34 percent more than the national average; while our people who pay the taxes for the government workers make just 5 percent above the national average.

Sure, the state is incredibly expensive. But it’s incredibly expensive for everybody. It’s just that one class, government functionaries, is living much better, in comparison to their fellow government workers in other states, than everybody else in this state.

That's just SALARIES. the entire point of taking a govt job is giving up salary for more off time/benefits

I'd say government employees do comparatively better next door in Nevada. Lower living expenses, yet comparable salaries. Same with Washington State.

So you wouldn't take a government job if it was offered to you?

That's how the Greeks fixed their economy....they vastly expanded their govt. job pool to cut unemployment and create prosperity.

Oh wait, that didn't end well now did it?

Exactly what occurred I Greece. they now have vast lay offs and no industry has big government created regulations that has industry move or go under. I watched a documentary the other night on a woman who wanted to open a coffee shop and book store combination. It took one year to get book store permit and she is still waiting after two years on permit to serve coffee.

Government has a truly ingenious scam going. You see the purpose of government is to fail at whatever task it is given to do and thereby it necessitates ever growing government and ever increasing taxes to do the tasks it consistently fails to competently do.

The schools always need more money because they do a substandard job of educating kids, the police need more money because crime always increases because they arrest people for victimless crimes, the roads are always in a state of disrepair and they always need more and more money to lean on their shovels and not repair them, the military goes all over the world invading other countries and finding any reason to be constantly at a state of war.

It just goes on and on, they just keep coming back to the well for more and more of the taxpayers money so that they can fail to do what they are paid to do.. it is basically the definition of insanity.
