It is a civil war,both sides heavily armed,why is the USA taking sides?

What side should we back in Iraq right now?
Civilians were killed there in protests.

well we would not attack china that would be a stupid move just like we would not attack russia unless they hit us first cause it would be a thermal nuclear war and we all lose
