Standard procedure for public unions is to give not an inch in the face of a budget shortfall, and accept the layoffs that result. The tactic seems irrational until it is remembered that layoffs (like everything else in the union world) are done by seniority, which means that almost everyone in a union knows he is safe from a coming round of cuts. The least senior members who will lose their jobs are the lowest-compensated anyway, meaning they have no sway within their union or at the negotiating table
Bring back government employment to numbers as a percentage of the population that they were in the 60s. Too many workers which are all living on the taxpayer dollar. We can't afford it.
The entitlements all need to come to the table for major slashing so only the major disabled folks get long term help.
Make major lawsuit and lawyer reform so businesses don't all run away.
Make friendlier business environment through better tax law and regulations.
Maybe retire lots of laws we don't need.
Stay away from the drugs.
Try to find jobs and don't expect major pay without mad skills.

1- How is that going to help restore the middle class?
2- Are you sure about that? To give you a perspective, in 1962, the federal workforce (civilian, 2.48 million) was 1.3% of the total population (186.5 million).

In Wisconsin I think we saw some numbers that 1 out of 6 work for the government which is flat out crazy. Maybe more like 1 out of 80 will do.
Why, because government employees are in some ways like welfare, it is all on taxpayer dollars, it is not from the market at all. So they are a drag on the taxes of taxpayers.
If we make more friendly business environment maybe some manufacturing could come back to the USA. Unions, drugs, stupid laws and lawsuits pretty much made it cheaper to leave.
Which would mean we would have to get rid of all the laws, lawsuits, unions, restrictions and politics against corporations and wealthy people that drive employers elsewhere.
Make more people realize that being a wage earner is not going to get you far in terms of economic prosperity. Also increase education in high skills and high value fields.
The days of sucking in the corporate or government t*t and gliding into retirement are over.
Those that have high value skills and services they can put on the open market that can work on contract or consultant basis will get ahead.
Wage earners are not commodities that have to compete with workers in other parts of the world who are working for jobs. In most cases these people are willing to work for less than Americans.

Yep. Absolutely.
