I took Journalism my freshman year in high school. It was then said that the writer for the papers were to write, due to readership capabilities, at the 7th grade level. That was in 1976!
The reason that newspapers are failing, is they have forgotten how to write for the audience. They are not writing for an audience, they are writing just to see themselves in print. Doesn't matter if the audience can read it or not. Doesn't matter if the audience is interested in what they have to say or not. As long as they can get the piece past the editor of the paper, they're happy.
The
consumer has the power, always, to make or break a product. Some where along the way, people have forgotten that and so these companies news or not, market to like the wind blows. This way awhile, that way awhile and they forget the reason they are in business to begin with, 'the audience'.
If the majority of the audience is at a 7th grade reading level, then why on earth would a writer write to a smaller audience? Perhaps, they would like to keep those folks, uniformed!
