The average American still enjoys a better quality of life than the average Norweigan
^^^This isn't even close to being true.
When real quality of life is measured, Americans just don't stack up except if you compare our very wealthy to their very wealthy. In the middle and at the bottom, they CRUSH us in quality of life. The difference is almost embarrassing.
Americans measure quality of life in a particularly lame way...size of house, size of car, amount of cars, amount of toys, surname on the back of your jeans, credit score, how often you can eat at lousy chain restaurants, ostentatious purchases such as 5 million inch big screen TV's, and other junk.
Norwegians (and most of western Europe) measure quality of life by things that matter. How much vacation you get per year, how good is health care, how much time you have with friends and family, good roads, good schools, clean environment, low crime....REAL issues that make a society a nice place to live.
Not being a part of the EU, being blessed with plenty of natural resources, and having a small population helps(when it comes to micromanaging everyone). Nevermind the cultural differences, individualism and capitalism are engrained facets of American culture. The average American still enjoys a better quality of life than the average Norweigan; however the bottomfeeders have a superior gravy train in Norway than in the US.
Perhaps you are confusing standard of living with quality of life.
They have higher taxes. Unlike the U.S. Which expects government to provide all these services at low cost. That's all right, our government has plenty of printing presses.

Most Americans do. And that's because they think that it's the same thing. If i can buy a bass boat and an RV, i must have a good quality of life! LOL...that's ridiculous of course, but it's normal American thinking because we're hardwired into thinking that being able to consume is the be all/end all.

Most Norwegians I know travel 1-2 times abroad every year. Exotic destinations, like Thailand are getting more and more popular.
Do the average American woman have 46 (100% pay) or 56 (80% pay) weeks paid parental leave?
Paid sick leave. 12 days or 24 days (the IA agreement). Not that common in the U.S.

Why do some people think that haveing all that free time or getting everything free from the Gov. is equal to a great quality of life? as for your benefit assesment everyone I know gets 5 weeks eventuallu and that much or more sick time paid....

Plenty of Americans are getting over a year of time off. Not paid well, though.
It's not (to use and American term) a "free government handout"! Norwegians have made the decision to pay higher taxes in order to receive incredible benefits....and they live well!
