It does seem like the brain 'creates' consciousness somehow, but then again, to my knowledge, nobody has ever come close to solving the 'hard problem'. It seems consciousness depends on certain structures in the brain stem, however, do these structures CREATE consciousness? Or do they merely facilitate it?

I find it hard to imagine how something of the nature of consciousness can spontaneously arise out of the physical process of natural selection. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it doesn't make sense to me.

Is it possible the physical world is actually created by consciousness, and not vice versa? After all, it appears that the sun and planets orbit Earth, but we now know it's the other way around, could that be true for consciousness?

I do not know how consciousness is created but I do know that life (as we know it) would be unconscious without it.

Can science ever explain why a computer runs and can access memory, until it breaks down and cannot run anymore?

The problem is in the question.

I think we have to redefine consciousness.

Even a dog is self aware.

I don't know, but I'd like to find out!

People have philosophised about this forever and it's all very interesting.

Interesting fact: Medical science has no idea how inhalational anesthesia agents work. These agents cause loss of consciousness.

Shouldn't this thread be in the Religion and Philosophy forum?

Not all lifeforms have consciousness or a brain. The sea-sponge lacks a brain and a nervous system.

Science already explains consciousness in physical terms. Mind is what brain does.

Electrical impulses releasing chemicals causing other electrical impulses. That's the basis of consciousness right there. Pretty much neurons the glial cells are consciousness.
