Why is whenever someone disagree's with something else that happens in the world (especially in the Middle East), people go on insane rampages, kill each other and destroy THEIR OWN buildings? Now I am sure that if someone burns a Bible here or a flag or whatever, American people are not going to storm a UN building and go on a rampage. It seems this stuff happens daily over there. Why can't we just wash our hands of the entire region? They will NEVER be civilized or understand freedoms. Let's please stop wasting money that we don't have trying to build up a nation that will never resemble a "free" nation.
Islam is the primary religion in an under developed part of the world. Where Europe, the America's and parts of Asia had hundreds of thousands of years to adapt to a modern day post industrial society that we in America know of, the middle east didn't.

During the crusades, Islam and Christianity were both on the same killing levels, Christians probably even more. With the advent of industrialized society where people had jobs and were parts of a larger society then a few hundred, we began to see killing in the name of religion as a bad thing. This still took hundreds of years to accomplish, and there are still insane idiots who kill in the name of God.

But Islam, Arabs, and Persians didn't quite have that luxury.

In time, Islam will be the same as Christianity, and another insane religious group will take their place. This is just how things change over time.

But it is more than this also. No area has been exploited, destroyed, culture over looked, bad mouthed and generally pissed on by most of society like Arabs and the middle east also. Remember, Europeans went into this region of the world and divided it the way they saw fit. The United States sponsored the annexation of an Arab country, their most holy lands, and gave it to people who hadn't really lived there in a thousand years, all to make up for not killing the Nazi's fast enough.

And religion is the name that is used to justify their hatred for all of that. Just like every other religion has been used throughout history to justify killing.

When God gets brought into anything, it means bad things.

In other words, leave God out of it, and it makes it a whole lot harder for people who really don't profit from all of this killing to go along with it.

This is what conservatives actually believe.

How many Muslim women do you know that are allowed to expose their skin?
My Iranian colleagues back in Germany had wives/girlfriends who were stunning, who had no issue showing off what they had, and - judging by several very one-sided phone conversations in Farsi I overheard - weren't exactly what you'd call meek. (I don't know any Farsi, but anyone could've decoded "Yes, of course, I'm sorry.")

Yeah, Muslims are normal people:

Hundreds of angry Egyptian fans invade pitch after disallowed goal - Dirty Tackle - World Soccer*Blog - Yahoo! Sports

My favorite quote from the story:

The match was abandoned as the officials fled the scene and the crazies on the pitch threw stones, lit flares and attacked both the players and each other.

You can't teach animals to be civil.

I always thought it best to treat extremist religious fundamentalists (of all stripes) like a rabid pit bull. You're probably better off giving it a lot of space and avoiding poking it with a stick...

Dehumanizing your enemies, especially after enormous, sweeping generalizations, is excellent proof of your superiority.

Do you think those actions are civilized? Humans are supposed to be civilized, I thought anyway.

Not all Muslims do such things (why would you choose to single out a soccer riot, which happens in tons of places which are not predominantly Muslim?), and I recognize that fanaticism is destructive, but that counts for every faith. Your logic is the kind that produces the very religious extremism you are railing against in this thread.

I have the capacity to condemn an action without viewing such an action as representative of the billion plus people who subscribe to Islam.

My point is, how do we think we are going to "change" people and make them "free" when they act like this?

And I agree that EVERY religion has it's nuts. It just seems like one has more than the other nowadays.

Riots in LA and riots in Afghanistan are examples of uneducated people lashing out against "easy" targets and perceived threats, because they lack the courage or resources to go after what really threatens their day to day existence.... and it aint the United States government in either case.

A venting of sorts, but against the wrong people ... people whipped into a frenzy by pastors and leaders who want to grow their influence.

Obviously the yokel pastor in Gainesville and his congregation of 10 people pose no threat to Islam or Aghanistan, but when confronting your REAL enemy would get you killed, it's always easy to find new sources to take out your frustrations. It's common in the Arab world, where oppressive governments are more than happy to pass blame to "others" (Israel, The United States, "the West") to divert the attention and energy of their populace, who might (and are, arguably), waking up and realizing their oppression comes from within, not without.
