Is The Ivory Coast Next For U.S. Involvement? (http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_US_IVORY_COAST?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DE FAULT&CTIME=2011-04-03-07-00-55 - broken link)

"Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says the U.S. is "deeply concerned" about the situation in the Ivory Coast and reports of human rights abuses and a massacre of more than 1,000 people."

It sounds like the U.S. may feel compelled to get involved in yet another country's problems.

US involvement? Probably (and hope) not. The French landed there today.

Let the French deal whith the problem. The more I see going on in the world, the more isolationist I'm becoming. Let's just close all our foreign bases, bring all troops home, and open bases along our nation's border. Let them be the muscle behind border patrol.

If the United Nations security council votes on a resolution to bomb, ok, the President can do that.

If the United Nations security council votes to invade, and congress votes to declare war, I'm ok with that. I would expect the other 4 security council members to cough up the same number of troops that we do though.

If, for whatever reason, there is an threat to the shores and people of the United States, and congress declares war, then we can invade on our own.

Those I support, nothing more, nothing less.

So, let me see. So long as the UN security council approves a resolution to bomb, then the President can act alone and do what he wants. But if there is a call to invade (by the UN again) or if there is an "immediate threat" to the US, then the President, as Commander-in-Chief, has to wait for Congress.

So not only do we have to get permission from other countries but the President isn't allowed to defend the US if we are attacked or threatened directly?
