Transocean Ltd gave its top executives bonuses for achieving the "best year in safety performance in our company's history" - despite the explosion of its oil rig that killed 11 people and spilled 757 million litres of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.
The company said in a regulatory filing that its most senior managers were given two thirds of their total possible safety bonus.
Transocean noted "the tragic loss of life" in the Gulf when the rig operated by BP PLC exploded last April. But it said the company still had an "exemplary" safety record because it met or exceeded certain internal safety targets concerning the frequency and severity of its accidents, according to the filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday.
Safety accounts for a quarter of the executives' total cash bonuses. The total bonus for CEO Steve Newman last year was $US374,062 ($A363,300).
Were they directly responsible for overseeing or for lack of oversight of the platform that was involved?
Yes, if they run the company, if they are in charge, they ARE responsible....it's THEIR JOB!...what did you think their job was???
Might've know there would be support for the morally vacant execs.
As righties would say, "those execs EARNED those bonuses"....no matter what they did, moral or not, they earned that money for killing Americans, aiding in the destruction of the economy, the trashing of the environment.

Righties support them.
You apparently don't get what I'm asking. I'm questioning if they are in charge of other parts of BP...maybe safety execs in a different part of the world? Or were they over this particular platform?
BP and Transocean blame each other for Gulf of Mexico oil spill
BP and the contractor that carried out drilling for the oil company in the Gulf of Mexico have blamed one another for "a cascade of failures" that led to the massive oil spill threatening America's south-eastern coastline.
Lamar McKay, chairman of BP America, told the first of two Congressional hearings into the environmental catastrophe that it was Transocean which conducted the well drilling operations.
He said Transocean owned the Deepwater Horizon rig and the piece of safety equipment which should have prevented a methane bubble from triggering the fatal explosion on April 20.
The blast led to the deaths of 11 workers and the flow of 5,000 barrels of oil a day into the Gulf of Mexico which is taking a heavy toll of the environment and economy in that part of the United States.
Although BP has admitted it is “ultimately responsible” for the clean-up costs, Mr McKay noted that "only seven of the 126 onboard the Deepwater Horizon rig were BP employees" and so BP only has "some of the story".
