When is it okay for newspapers, TV, news magazines and/or radio to accept money from the federal government on which they report? This is not a PBS/NPR question. I'm asking about the national news media in general. When would it give the appearance of pay for positive coverage or pay for omitting negative coverage?

Either NO (my preference)

-or-

YES with full disclosure

For what reason should the government be funding any free enterprise?

Of course it is. A better question is should any organization be able to be called "news" when they show bias and donate clearly to political parties.

Shouldn't be worried more about quality of journalism as opposed to it being positive or negative to your personal beliefs? I never saw an eye brow raised on foundation and funding of a "news" agency like Al Hurra. In fact, most aren't even aware of it.

As long as the journalists are independent thinkers and workers, and not pushing a corporate or government agenda, what would be the problem in supporting a basic need (but not sponsoring it as a whole)? Is quality of information and an educated populace not necessary towards the health of a democratic republic?

Happens all the time with national news outlets and private corporations.

The "truthiness" of the news reported by such outlets varies by each outlet.

Is it right for corporations to buy coverage or buy suppression of negative coverage? I'm guessing...yes?

But any government supporting a news outlet runs the risk of turning that outlet into a propaganda machine. And while that's a definite concern, it doesn't necessarily mean that government support must equate to propaganda.

No private industry should be funded by the government [unless they are producing a product that the government is buying]
