Put a five year moratorium on new weapons systems, freeze General Officer Promotions. The Missle shield that doesn't work will save us a trillion by itself.

Don't forget, "defense" spending did not include spending in the two wars until the first budget under Obama. Total military spending in 2008 budget (FY2009) was $900 Billion.

if we are only spending 4.85% on defense, what are we spending on offense? 80% of GDP????
Actually, Social Security is 25% of the budget, or 6.25% of the GDP. MediCare/MediAid is 22% of the budget, or 5.5% of the GDP. Defense is 20% of the budget, or 4.85% of the GDP.

If you want to speak in percentages, in 2010 budget, SS was 29% of the total receipts and 20% of the total spending. Remember, unlike military spending or medicaid, SS has a revenue source (SS payroll tax).

He is probably talking about long term cuts that will total over $1 trillion over the course of several years.

ROFL! Then you know it is a deliberate lie.

Any time any one in Congress starts talking about "savings", "deficits" or "surpluses" and uses the phrase "over a 10 year period" is lying through their teeth. Congress cannot even accurately predict one year in advance, much less 10, and they expect people to believe them? Truly amazing.

medicaid spending has increased 44%..... 201b to 299b.....medicare/ciad makes up nearly 800 billion of our spending and is INCREASED big time each year
ss spending has increased 17% ........ 612B to 719b

cut ALL the spending
If we rolled all of those spending catagories back to even 2008 levels, we'd address a significant portion of the defecit. $290 billion isn't chump change, even with a trillion+ dollar defecit. Its a start. Instead, the spoiled children in DC are arguing about 30 billion vs $60 billion. effin' idiots.

What it usually means is that someone proposes a $10 trillion increase. They actually only increase spending by $9 trillion. Then they dance around and claim $1 trillion in cuts. Anyone in a real business that did this crap would be in jail.

I don't necessarily agree we should pull all foreign troops home, but we do need to get out of Afghanistan and Iraq somewhat soon. We should also close a lot of the bases that we currently have in Germany, Korea, etc.
