I said "working with kids" not teaching.

Reading is FUNDAMENTAL. And one shouldn't jump to conclusions full of assumptions.

In recent years, board members have been locked in an ideological battle between a bloc of conservatives who question Darwin’s theory of evolution and believe the Founding Fathers were guided by Christian principles, and a handful of Democrats and moderate Republicans who have fought to preserve the teaching of Darwinism and the separation of church and state.

Since January, Republicans on the board have passed more than 100 amendments to the 120-page curriculum standards affecting history, sociology and economics courses from elementary to high school.

And not just in Texas.

Social behavior is now part of teaching because the kids are not getting the basics of how to behave in society at home.

That's just a start.

This is indoctrination?
Seriously???

To the OP: why? To forestall the right-wing attack on public education in this country, of course.
What kind of dream world are people living in when they agree with someone like Michele Bachmann who says that everyone should home school their children? Seriously? Does she honestly believe that women, because of course it will be women, will be able to stop working to stay home and provide these services? Will she set the example by giving up her job?

Despite what some would like to believe, the American public supports our public schools and wants them to succeed.

"Keep in mind, polls show that the American mainstream considers the public education system one of the nation's most cherished institutions. When asked what areas of the public sector most deserve budget cuts, schools invariably come in last."

Texas holds unimaginable influence over the textbook market and that a Texas curriculum change will affect other schools all over the country. Texas is extending their influence beyond their own state in an attempt to yank back the yarns of history towards the right, which would be fine if they followed their own creed of state power and realized that their deconstructive methods will not stay within their own borders.

jojajn, don't let propaganda fear drive your opinions.
No school is forced to buy any textbooks. They are free to choose what they want.
California has huge clout as well and you don't see them plastered all over left leaning media do you ?

Chicago Math swept the nation. Where do you think that originated ?

Do yourself a favor and read, really read up on education changes and how the funding works.

You really believe that increase funding causes decreases in pupil achievement and a decrease of funding increases pupil achievement?
