Since a politician's crime often involves a betrayal of the public trust maybe a portion of the punishment should be public also, I'm thinking maybe stocks on the National Mall.

Wow.
If the corruption probe turns up real dirt, that sure is a sad way to end such a long career.
Also:
Alaska's only congressman, Republican Don Young, also is under federal investigation as part of the ongoing corruption probe, a federal law-enforcement official told The Associated Press last week. Part of the Young investigation involves his campaign-finance practices, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The almost laughable political drama like Mr. Smith Goes To Washington ect.......What a crock.....
Everyone has their hand out....Always have..... always will...... Now the prizes are far greater. I am convinced that to "get things done" one must enter the "Dark Side." Some like this guy in Alaska get in darker and deeper that's all....

At the risk of sounding corny and idealistic, I guess for me the big question is "What are these prizes?"
Is this it? ::see below::
Stevens,83, the Senate's senior Republican, has been under federal investigation for a 2000 renovation project more than doubling the size of his home in Girdwood, Alaska, near Anchorage, The Associated Press reported.
A bigger mansion?
If so, that's a really lame, ignorant way to use power.
Sure, there has been stuff going on since the Romans.
I guess I was deluded enough to think that it was the power itself that attracted crooked politicians, and corrupted honest ones.

Some people are hookers for less of the "Prizes" than others. For some it is the outward trappings ie the MacMansions. And yeah it is LAME and sure enough ignorant but it happens. Power allows people to think they are
too slick to be caught. And what do you think will happen to this guy ? How much 'Time" will he get? Yes, power itself attracts crooked politicians and corrupts honest ones.
