Why doesn't this suprise me?

Link: Hate-crime arrests in Quran desecrations at Pace University - Newsday.com (broken link)

Okay, so a student at Pace University tossed the Koran in the toilet, tacky. But four years in jail on hate crime charges? That seems like overkill to me.

To put this in perspective a few years ago, an artist recieved rave reviews and actually government (yes, that's right taxpayers money) funding to display a crucifix he had stuck in a jar of his own urine. Everyone thought this was 'art'.

A student tosses a Koran in a toilet and it's a hate crime.

Anyone see the double standard? I personally don't think either one should have been charged with anything, it is clearly protected under the freedom of speech. You want to burn a flag? It's offensive to me, but go ahead. Flush a Koran down the toilet, tacky, but clearly not illegal.

I felt very offended about the crucifix put in a jar of urine, but it is free speech, no matter how much I disagree with it.

Who is the Police Department to decide what is a hate crime and what isn't? If he flushed the Koran down the toilet thinking how much he hated Muslims, is it a hate crime then? Are we going to start prosecuting people based on their thoughts?

Looks like a slippery slope of Muslim Politcal Correctness.

Hate crime laws are nothing more than the beginning of our government controlling our thoughts by prosecution for "hate" thought.

Hate legislation should be thrown in the toilet. They already had strong enough laws in place and at the very most the person should have been charged with misdemeanor vandalism.

I thought hate crimes only pertained to immutable traits like race or sex. Last time I checked, being a Muslim is a choice, or maybe not.

This is why hate crime legislation is absolutely and thoroughly retarded, and will slowly be twisted to include so many different things people will be afraid to speak their mind or do as they wish.

Quiet honestly, hate crime legislation is a direct violation of the constitution.

The reality is he'll probably receive no punishment and the only ones who will benefit from much ado about nothing are the lawyers.

We already have laws that prohibit murder, assault & battery, and vandalism. Why do we need laws that add extra punishment based off some perceived motive? The concept of a "hate crime" seems fundamentally flawed.

That's ridiculous! I really don't see how throwing a holy book in the can could warrant 4 years of jail-time! I wouldn't even give him a punishment, don't we have rights in this country anymore? I might disagree with it but it certainly isn't worth going to jail for. GIVE ME A BREAK!

I don't disagree. After all, what is the opposite of a hate crime? A love crime?

Exactly. Whether I kill you because I don't like your race, or I kill you because you have a $5000 watch on your wrist, its murder and both cases deserve equal prosecution.
