I am posting to see if I am perhaps over-reacting. Easter Sunday I was invited to a non-denominational church that I would describe as a mega church. The service was very modern and I would describe this church as sort of what Joel Olsteen (sp?) has in Houston. Anyway at one point (and very briefly I might add), the mayor of the town in which I live came up to the stage. He did not say anything political HOWEVER he is up for re-election in May. The Pastor pretty much sort of gave a reason for his visit as the church is praying for the community and the leaders etc...which is fine by me. But where I have a problem is ANY politician showing up at a religious service.
Am I over reacting? Growing up I never EVER experienced any politician visiting my church and speaking publically there. And I attended one of the largest Episcopal Churches in Dallas. I was hoping that people would weigh in. Again the Mayor did not talk about politics but his timing is convenient.
Thanks.

Being mayor doesn't mean you can't attend church anymore, that would be a violation of the 1st Amendment. You'd be abridging his free exercise of religion. If the pastor did not explicitly endorse the mayor for the election and if the mayor did not make a campaign speech, then there is no issue.

I don't mind that he attended church but he went on the stage and talked for about 5 minutes or so. He was a visitor as was I. I guess I am overreacting.

Funny you should mention this since Obama made sure he attended church on Easter. I think that's "for show" too.

If it is for election purposes, the church needs to lose its tax status.

Not just Obama. Every President in my lifetime has done the same thing. I don;t think that your mayor broke any laws by appearing at your church. politicians have been doing that for years.

Trying proving it was for election purposes, if you can every DA and U.S. attorney would love to here your ideas because in every major city, town and hamlet there is a politician doing a grin and grab, meet and greet at some church, temple or whatever on any given sunday until election day. It is as ritualistic as kissing babies.
