IF CD PnC is any indication of people's true feelings, I was a lot happier before I realized just how much hate and anger lurks behind the seemingly normal faces of the people I see out in public.
Both. It has caused people to express feelings that they would otherwise never express, which is both a bad thing. It's good in that people with severe social anxiety, speech disorders, or other conditions that don't give them a real chance to express themselves in real life have a new space in which to communicate and socialize and express themselves. The downside is you get things like CD P&C forums, CD R&P forums, Omegle, FB scandals, etc. etc.
We're becoming a nation of people with the attention spans of 2 year olds. Everywhere you go you see people listening to music, playing games on cell phones or hand held video games, talking on cell phones, surfing the internet, watching movies on portable DVD players or laptops. Many of these while they're working. Nobody has any idea whats going on around them or can interract with people face to face. Imagine having to build a bridge or a building or work together to build a dam or something in an emergency. People would be clueless. You can't fucntion as a society if you can't relate to other people.
Talk radio is the last holdout of sharing ideas and opinions. Hate it for whatever reason but its the only thing keeping society from imploding.

Yes, although I am in the minority(since it took me a while to warm up to cell phones), I do see people having barriers, but they may want these barriers.
This world has become crazier with the violence that is thrust into the internet media. Did you see the McDonalds beating?
I can still read 5-15 page articles and regular books. The thing is, those who are hired by companies are usually those like you described, so maybe they are preferred.
I was volunteering for a campaign once. There was a meeting. All of a sudden everyone took out their Blackberries and checked their e-mails. I felt shut out, but I was glad no one was looking at me. Reason: I had no Blackberry.

Right now, the internet has only made shopping easier, entertainment cheaper and porn more free.
But in the future, internet will BE life. We'll rather live in the virtual world than the real one.
