i guess there was a lot of small-business opposition to this [organized by wal-mart, interestingly enough ], as well as opposition from gov. haley and some tea party folks.

Amazon.com is abandoning plans to build a distribution center in South Carolina because the state won't give the company a tax break, taking the promise of 1,250 full-time jobs and $100 million in investment elsewhere, a company official said Thursday.
Plenty of other states want Amazon. If I was Amazon I would bail on SC too. They had a deal with the previous administration but the new one under Nikki Haley dropped the ball and reneged on the agreement. If I was a CEO looking at SC to expand, I would seriously start looking elsewhere.
It's fundamentally unfair for one company to get tax breaks that are not available to other companies. Governments should not be picking business winners. Kudos to SC for upholding principle.

Amazon was not selling there.
It was a distribution center. There should be no "tax".
"Tennessee: Amazon plans to spend $139 million and build two distribution centers in Hamilton and Bradley counties. They would employ between 1,400 to 1,500 full-time workers and ultimately more than 5,000 part-time workers, an Amazon official told local legislators earlier this year.
Democrat Bredesen’s successor, Republican Bill Haslam, has all but acknowledged the state is waiving requirements that would make Internet retailing giant Amazon collect sales taxes on purchases made by its Tennessee customers."
Thank you, Governor Haslam. That was a big deal, to me.

Governments are getting desperate for revenue.
Amazon does not sell in South Carolina? Really? Because I ordered a bunch of things from Amazon while I lived in South Carolina.
Where does Amazon 'sell from' if not their distribution centers?
Also note that the law is that retailers have to collect sales tax when shipping to a state where they have a "physical presence." A distribution center is certainly a "physical presence."
We have an Amazon distro center near Harrisburg that mostly hires temps.
