I agree. Age is no impediment to crimes. When I was a kid we had a neighbour that was a career criminal and in and out of the joint all his life. And he has a wife and son- the son was a friend of my and my brothers. And the old man is still up to it!
This isn't some abstract argument, though. This is a human being, caged in prison for decades for a crime many believe he did not commit.
How can anyone see this in black and white terms? I suspect it wouldn't be so simple if you were the one being accused.
Our justice system is excellent, but not perfect. Why not admit when there's tremendous doubt such as this, and take another look at it? Consider the possibility this kid, a teenager, was wrongfully convicted and locked up for about 60 years. As a society, don't we have an obligation to take a second look? I mean, come ON, it's about time!

Well, then that would mean he should get a lawyer and see about an appeal, not just be turned loose.
But the thread topic is whether a prisoner should be granted parole because he's grown old. William Heirens's guilt or innocence is a different subject.
Totally in agreement......if he's proven innocent it becomes a moot point, but until then....he has time to serve.....
He's almost 80 years old for crying out loud! I say let him out, maybe to an assisted living facility. I actually feel sorry for him having sat in prison for 60+ years...
You have to be joking, just because he's 78 doesn't mean he can't kill agian and he has nothing to loose.
A life sentence means just that. He will die in prison. guess he should have chosen a different path. I feel sorry only for those he killed and the families he assaulted.
Do not begrudge the society that has no sympathy for your deeds. Your sentence is to die in prison. Done. Do better in your next life you screwed this one up.
