Organized out-of-state efforts to defeat it from groups like the LDS church, I imagine. Although, it has only been put to a vote in a few states... and none within the last two years as far as I know.

The votes should be irrelevant, anyway. We don't "vote" on the civil rights of others in the US. Civil rights are guaranteed by the constitution. I think very soon the whole question will be answered by the judiciary.

Because people will do behind the privacy of a voting curtain what they're too ashamed to do when asked directly.

Also I'm sure fear-mongering ads like this might help:

except this is not a civil right by any measure of the word and is a slap in the face to all who fought and suffered for real civil rights.

In NYC? I have no doubt that same-sex marriage could be passed by a popular vote there.

In 1967, the U.S. Supreme Court said that marriage is a civil right. Now, whether there's a right to marry someone of the same-sex may be a different question, but they did at least say that opposite-sex marriage is a civil right.

"Marriage is one of the "basic civil rights of man," fundamental to our very existence and survival...."

Because national polls don't equate in individual states.

Because liberals lie in public so they look good.

When they get in the voting booth and no one is looking their bigotry comes out.

At least Republicans and Independants are honest about it.

Liberals = liars and bigots

If liberals could have Jim Crow laws reestablished by secret ballot they would do it. And blame it on the right.

We are the bigots? Which side cares about who lies with who?
