It's surprising--no, more like amazing--that you went so far to try and uncover some sort of hidden meaning in that comment. All the President meant was that people often think their own country is exceptional, in comparison to all the others. So in that regard, Americans aren't any different than anyone else.
Summation: he meant precisely what he said, so the spin doctors could take a mini vacation.
I can accept what you have said here. However there are times that Obama comes across a bit too arrogant for his own good.
Of course other Countries think they are exceptional, but, i think perhaps the U.S. carrys it a bit further. Don't think we mean anything bad by what we say, how other Countries take what we say, is their problem.
By his 'I think USA is exceptional, as the Brits think Britain is exceptional, and as the Greeks think Greece is exceptional'.
Something to do with an empire that has had its day, perhaps?
Not very inspiring words, now, to come from an imperial power's leader. Even if you believe this to be true, how does this help the morale of a nation?
Could the timing for such a statement have been worse (given, that is, that the country is being threatened like never before by myriad islamic radical groups, a belligerent resurgent Russian state, hostile European socialists, not to mention a ballooning empire-in-waiting in China)?
If you already came to the table with your preconceived notions of what he meant and aren't going to change your mind no matter what any of us says, why ask us what he meant?
He meant what you want him to mean! Anymore dumb questions?
What is even more amazing is how oblivious they were to the spectacular failures of their boy George W. Bush.
It's pathological.
I guess we will never escape all the anti-Bush crap coming from progs. The man has been gone for 2 1/2 years and still is compared to Obama as a form of whining about people who don't like Obama.

GWB is not looking too shabby right about now.
A variety of opinions here.
To the person suggesting that the President meant to insult Britain and Greece by this comment, I think you're way off. To others who think he is just comparing America to 'any other country', also off the mark. Why Britain, the most enduring empire in the modern era? Why Greece, the greatest classical western empire? Again, he could not invoke Rome because there is no Rome today.
By the way, the world at large doesn't hate the USA. Besides the radical Muslims who inherently hate freedom and democracy, not to mention the socialists (but their hate just encompasses the US, as the single, solitary country that represents the systems and notions they abhor). OK, admittedly, that's a big part of the world haha. Generally, I'd say much of the world is more jealous of the USA, and wants to be the next USA.
I am asking all your thoughts, and even though I believe what I believe, I will concede if I see a convincing argument to sway me. That is what a forum is about. None of you has made a single convincing argument that the President was not talking about the USA as a once-great empire that now has to resign itself as being just another player amongst bunch of other nations.
The President's language is virtually traitorous. Humility is not something the US needs more of nowadays. The country has already been humbled by endless wars, terrorist threats, economic recession. The country does not need a president to bow down to other nations, friendly or hostile.
The USA today reminds me of post-Jimmy Carter America. Big difference: back then a strong, resolute leader came along to lift the nation out of the doldrums.
Today, by contrast, President Obama is the wrong president at the wrong time.
What is even more amazing is how oblivious they were to the spectacular failures of their boy George W. Bush.

"their boy George W. Bush"..........Is that a racist denigrating remark aimed at slamming people who don't respond appropriately to the OP?
