By his 'I think USA is exceptional, as the Brits think Britain is exceptional, and as the Greeks think Greece is exceptional'.

Something to do with an empire that has had its day, perhaps?

Not very inspiring words, now, to come from an imperial power's leader. Even if you believe this to be true, how does this help the morale of a nation?

Could the timing for such a statement have been worse (given, that is, that the country is being threatened like never before by myriad islamic radical groups, a belligerent resurgent Russian state, hostile European socialists, not to mention a ballooning empire-in-waiting in China)?

He meant the United States was nothing special and he would be just as happy pretending to have been born any other country and run for office.

kevinm, I believe the President thinks this way too.

But in this specific statement, he chose to invoke Britain and Greece (not Brazil or India). He could only have been less subtle if he said Athenians or Romans, but those don't exist as nationalities. I think it was a 'former empire jockeying for a new second-tier place in the world' discourse.

Obama haters spend an awful amount of time thinking about and following everything Obama does. What sad, sad lives they must lead.

I think it's time well spent paying attention to what any President says and does.

You seem to spend some time on us 'Obama-haters' who are nowhere near as influential as the President.

Foreign policy hasn't been the "long-suit" of any U.S. administration for some time now and this latest open insult to both Britain and Greece should add nicely to the Israel equation, don't you think?
Why go to so much effort to make even more people hate us? There's enough of them already!

Has it ever occurred to you that our constant bragging that we're the best at everything under the sun has caused a great deal of resentment in the world? How about we try a little humility for a change and acknowledge that other people in other countries are proud of their countries just like we are proud of our. There is no mystery meaning in what Obama said. It's as straight forward as it gets and it takes nothing away from our greatness to acknowledge that other countries think they are great as well.

It's surprising--no, more like amazing--that you went so far to try and uncover some sort of hidden meaning in that comment. All the President meant was that people often think their own country is exceptional, in comparison to all the others. So in that regard, Americans aren't any different than anyone else.

Summation: he meant precisely what he said, so the spin doctors could take a mini vacation.

I repped you because common sense in a nonsensical thread is a rare and delightful thing, indeed.
