Will New Education Regulations Endanger Your Child’s Privacy? | The Blaze

"Last month, the U.S. Department of Education issued a controversial proposal to amend the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). FERPA was signed into law in 1974 with the sole purpose of protecting students’ educational records. Now, the law is being dramatically altered in an effort that critics claim will endanger student privacy, while increasing the federal government’s access to and control over private information."

"The Department of Education has placed these regulatory changes up for public review and comment. The deadline to comment is today, Monday, May 23. McGroarty believes that changes of this magnitude should be presented to Congress – a move the Department has avoided."

" Critics believe that the executive branch is overreaching in its powers and contradicting democratic values by making such sweeping changes to a law that was originally created to protect privacy."

The Executive Arm reaching out, yet again, bypassing Congress - this time for our children!

If you don't like this over reaching intrusion, read the article, click on the link to make a comment (deadline is today!) and then consider voting for Ron Paul in 2012!

Why would anyone think that privacy ever was protected. Anyone with reason or money can find out everything you have ever done anywhere you have ever been. Since the creation of internet access effectivly all privacy has dissappeared.

So what? I don't care if you know about what I have done. I do not try and hide anything.

So, are you a supporter of the School-to-Work Program?

We should oppose these moves at every opportunity. Our government already has way too much information on us and does not need easier access.

Totally Agree. Did you click the link and leave a comment? Deadline is Today!

This is a really slippery slope issue and its not headed in a good direction for our privacy as well as our children's right to freely pursue any career path/job they choose. Google "school-to-work" and "OBE" for background information on this issue.

I read the article. Like the original post, it starts from an invalid premise.

The Federal Educational Records Privacy Act is a statute. The regulations proposed by the Department of Education are regulations. The Department of Education, as a part of the executive branch, does not have the power or authority to change a statute.

What is proposed is a change to the regulations adopted pursuant to statute. I haven't read the notice of proposed rulemaking, and from the brief article that was linked it's really not possible to tell what the changes are.

It is true that we are all entitled to comment on proposed rules.

This from an administration whose president will not release any of his college transcripts?

Transparency for "some,"
But NOT for the "One."

The federal department of education is a part of that fourth branch of government, like the EPA, Energy Department, FDA, HHS etc... They have been allowed to write their own regulations, laws and mandates, they levy, enforce, adjudicate, tax, and hand out criminal penalties; they are like all other three branches of the federal government all rolled into one. Completely controlled by the executive branch and not held unaccountable by the legislative or judicial branch.

We need to give the voice back to the PEOPLE. We need to get rid of this unconstitutional Fourth Branch. It is being abused to override our Freedoms.
