Funny, i was sitting and thinking am i turning into a hippy when it comes to animals? hahaha...I am a libertarian/conservative/constitutionlist...but when it comes to animals i think im very sensetive like someone would predict a liberal to be. I watched that video from the 70s, maybe even 60s about the couple of guys who raised the lion and then went back into the jungle to find him and the lion played and loved with him, and even introduced them to his wife. It really touched me. I also watch the vids of the gorillas cradling a child who has fallen into a zoo cage. I am also realistic in realizing this doesnt happen often, but a part of me thinks that it is kind of neat. The big difference is that you have to not try to force someone with laws that they have to do certain things, and that is what makes the difference between conservatism and liberalism. I personally may not like the fact that someone goes and kills elephants in hunting, but i also should not try to force them not to be able to do that. I suppose I am the type of guy who likes animals more then people. hahaha

All I know is that I think people who abuse animals should get heavy prison sentences.

I've never met a conservative who was against laws prohibiting actions by individuals (see drugs, sex, marriage, abortion, for a partial list) except when it is in the interest of big business.

As for libertarians, I've never met one that lived in the real world.

Actually, I find that fellow Libertarians are the ONLY people living in the real world, looking around them and seeing the problems of our nation and our economy, and coming up with logical ways to deal with them.

Let me guess, a "Government is God" liberal? They like to scoff at how silly Libertarians are for not supporting multiple foreign wars we can't afford, not supporting the "Free Trade" that continues to destroy our Middle Class and the economy, imposing limits on the massive size/spending/borrowing of a bloated and corrupt government, etc. Or is the argument that Government is now so big and oppressive that it is naive to think we citizens can change anything?

Then perchance you can explain to the rest of us how your "real world" outlook would go about protecting, interesting enough, gorillas and elephants without legal prohibitions against hunting them into extinction since even with such prohibitions finds both species listed as endangered? Would a libertarian conservationist simply send poachers DVD's of the latest addition of Nature (oops that's PBS) to tug at their inner PETA? And while you are waiting for their animal loving nature to emerge, do you just hope that enough of the beast will survive the interim? Or does your animal hugging hippydom end at your remote control?

Ah, no. Just a person imbued with a certain level of rationality and the realization that while government is not god, but it is a necessary tool for pursuing public policy.

One could make the argument that because the extinction of such a creature could upset the ecosystem, we ought to prevent that from happening.

Not all Libertarians follow the exact same "party line," just as I'm sure you know that not all Democrats are socialist weasels who think they can just wish away healthcare costs and poverty without any thought about how they'll PAY for it (and when they do, it usually involves something like taking away even more money from the producers).

Libertarianism looks good on paper, but doesn't work in the real world.
