Actually, in my view, if the only way you can keep your kid disciplined is with a threat of violence, you have failed as a parent, and a human being.
Spanking and hitting are not different. To say they are is only to make an excuse. I'll go ahead and ask how they're different, but I am not expecting a good answer from anyone.
Fun little side story; I read a book filled with testimonies from Native Americans in the late 19th/early 20th century, a time when young Native Americans were forcefully removed from their homes to become 'civilized.' Some Native American parents sent their children off to these 'schools' hoping it would allow them to be successful and respect in their changed world. A story of one man who did this involved his discovery that at this school, the children were spanked for misbehavior. He could not understand how cruelty could be used as a method of teaching and attempted to remove the child from the school. I can't remember if they let the child leave or not.
I share this to point out that spanking a kid isn't 'normal' or 'just the way things are.' It's a learned trait and it is child abuse. The studies back me up on this.
I recall Ted Turner mentioned that when he transgressed his Dad would have him,Ted, physically discipline his father. Here is a bit from the interview
...ordering his son to administer the lashings. With tears streaming down his cheeks, Ted obeyed. “It was the most painful thing I ever did in my entire life,” he recalls, giving his father credit for understanding that “that would be a more effective punishment than him beating me.”
Well, I had my ass smacked in public. I also am a top 5%'er that pays for the 45% who don't pay their way. I have two grown sons that are probably in the top 20% that also pay the way for the 45% that don't pay their way. None of us have a criminal record, we own homes, we have close friends in the community etc etc..
I suspect a good crack in the ass when your acting out is a good thing.
Maybe. However, a part of me is not convinced that it always works.
No, I'm not. However, I do know many people who got whipped as children. I notice that some of those persons have very short tempers, and sometimes brag about how tough they are, and sometimes joke about the kinds of objected they were spanked with.
I live in the South. Spanking is very frequently used here. It is often southern states that lead the nation in violent crime and incarceration.
I applaud when parents actually have the character and presence of mind to discipline their children when they act out in public. All too often the parents are clueless morons who are emotional 4 year olds themselves who have no idea how to act in public.

No correlation in the last. Spanking is a tool of parenting not the end all.
