As a conservative, I have no idea. Germany is doing the right thing.

If the Germans are looking to get off of nuclear power, they'll not only do it, but do it well and efficiently. We live in a country that gets NOTHING done, and maybe before you so quickly critisize others, you'll look at your own house first. Besides, you should be wishing them well in their endeavors, not hoping that it fails, like a lot of you are doing.
Nobody is hoping it fails. My opinion is that they are going to fail by putting a timeline on it. You can't put a timeline on when a new technology will be matured. 11 years is not enough time to take all the plant out of production and replace it with something that will feed the same amount of power, they will find out.

There is always a timeline with nuclear plants. They're not built forever.

Well, if they are pushing the envelope there, that is their fault. You still can't rush the creation of an alternative energy source to replace that kind of load. That is a disaster in the making.

This is an example of a nasty response:

And btw, Germans don't use AC's.

The Germans aren't worried. In fact, Germany had decided to shut down seven oldest of its seventeen nuclear power plants in March for a few months as a precautionary measure following the Fukushima disaster. Don't worry, Germans will be just fine.

Yeah right, I bet all professional buildings use it.
BTW, that was not a nasty response. It's called reality. You aint gonna come close in 11 years. Face it, your government is playing you for support. You'll see.

Just watch. I'd put my money on it.

Nuclear energy is kind of perverted as it cannot be ultimately controlled and the wasted material presents a hazard for many many (thousands?) years .

So basically I think it is a good idea that we shut down all nuclear power plants.

However, if France and the UK do not copy Germany, the risk situation from future nuclear incidents will only be slightly reduced. France alone operates more than 50 nuclear plants and 95% of all winds we get in Germany comes from the west, i.e. from France and the UK.
