Pro athletes posses talents that few have. In a free market those with a unique skill set can command the most.
If you don't like a particular sport, don't patronize it and none of your money with be used to support the salaries.
There really is no basis for anyone to complain (other than jealousy)
I think what a lot of people miss is that the players aren't getting paid those amounts based solely on their playing ability. They're paid based on the amount of licensing revenue they are capable of generating. The NBA, for example, makes a gazillion dollars on Kobe jerseys, hats, t-shirts, and whatever else they can stick his number on. That's where the real money is made. And considering they're making that revenue out of his name, is he not entitled to his share of it?
These sport stars have really smart agents. They get exactly what they are worth for their team. No one forces people to buy tickets and the overpriced merchandise.
At the same time, I do think that Americans (and also Europeans) have really weird values. I have never idolized anyone and I would not cry because a team I like loses a game. This is really pathetic.
to the detriment of the black community. but hey thats for another thread
see above. he should ask if he's helping "his peeps" get out of poverty or linger there. (my own) hijack over. sorry i couldn't resist.
Kobe didn't grow up in the hood. I'm not sure that he should be held responsible for his "peeps" lingering in poverty. Plus, I don't know what philanthropy he's involved in, exactly, so I can't comment on how he is or isn't helping.
And it's not just back players that generate licensing revenue. Plenty of white baseball players do too.

Why do you suppose that happens? How much money does your city and state earn from hosting those stadiums?
Stadiums are probably the most wasteful use of money ever invented.
Look at an NFL stadium. They cost anywhere form 500 million to a billion dollars to build. They are used 8 times a year for games. Maybe another 15-20 for other events. Baseball and basketball aren't much better.
Total and complete waste of time, money and resources from a purley economic viewpoint.
They do serve a purpose though. And so one can make a case that they are worth the cost.
Kind like when I'm asked to repair and correct another companies mess up.
I give them a price, take it or leave it.
For some reason, the mentality is that I'm going to do it for the same price as the guy that skrewed it up.
No concept of value.
They think every individual is equal, when in the real world, it is far from that.
