As in the ideals from the Enlightenment era. Lack of tyranny (we know have a plutocratic class). That all men are created equal...yet we don't treat equally.
I don't advocate going back to the idea that landowning Whites should vote, but the spirit of the Age of Enlightenment was one of more inclusion.
Is there some unknown race or class of people who don't have civil rights that I'm not aware of?
It is mostly the right wing. With that said, the left is culpable as well in allowing this to happen and also participating at times.
There is plenty of blame to go around. What's sad is that the divisiveness is so extreme that any thought of Congress actually trying to fix things is a distant dream. People put party before country, and none of our Founding Fathers anticipated that sorry state of affairs.
After leaving America, I actually feel sorry for those back at home. I feel bad for the greed and corruption that has cost millions of jobs. I feel bad for the social issues that are currently plaguing the nation (the resistance of gays, the banning of abortions, and the defunding of higher education).
I realized that while I considered myself active, I needed to do more. Yet, when you have people on here that think it's okay to hate gays, deregulate every industry, and push up student debt...what can you do?
Someday soon I will move back. However, I hope that it will be to a prosperous nation based on the ideals of our forefathers...not of the ideals of the far Christian and corporate right.
I find it disturbing that people have such a skewed view that they truly become envious of the poor since they don't pay federal taxes. How greedy of a society have we become when people are saying that the poor are to be envied since they pay less? THEY DON'T HAVE THE SAME MEANS.
So we shouldn't feel sorry that America has undergone a major recession caused by deregulation of financial markets? We shouldn't feel sorry that gays are being hypocritically persecuted? We should accept that planned parenthood...which does more than abortions...was almost defunded?
Should I be like Glitch or Marcopolo and be jumping for joy at the problems caused by poor regulations and policies?
Cali, do you understand that Barney Frank and Chris Dodd's special pet and funding source, Fannie Mae, was at the root of the financial crisis based on policies promoted by...Barney Frank and Chris Dodd? Did you know that Countrywide Mortgage was considered by Fannie to be its biggest producer? Did you know that the government-sponsored lenders Freddie and Fannie were corrupt and presented fraudulent financial statements in the years leading to the financial crisis, but were protected by Barney and Chris? The clean sweep we started in the 2010 elections can be finished in 2012, to run the rest of this nonsense out of Washington.
On gays, I happen to agree with you. The mix between social conservatives and fiscal conservatives and libertarians has some unfortunate aspects. But the impoverishment of the country inherent in Obamanomics will do more to damage straights and gays and blacks and whites and rich and poor than any amount of discrimination against any particular group.
No need to feel sorry for us. Most of us understand that no place is perfect, and there are advantages and disadvantages to wherever we may live.
Believe it or not, conservatives can get just as frustrated as liberals. While you may see the U.S. as right-wing or backwards, many conservatives in this country see liberalism, socialism, and government control everywhere they go.
I feel sorry for anyone who's stupid enough to believe that there's anywhere on this planet that they could move to and find better opportunities than they had here in the United States.

Depends on what someone wants to do. Believe it or not, the U.S. isn't the best country for everyone in the world - and that's a good thing. We've got plenty of people to take care of already.

The the individual spending decisions of 300 million people were all made by the deregulation?
I guess people really need things wrapped up in a nice little package in order to explain events.
