and this administration is considering a 56 MPG standard for all new vehicles.
Reuters) - The Obama administration is considering requiring all new cars and trucks sold in the United States to get an average of 56.2 miles per gallon by 2025, The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.
U.S. considers 56.2 mpg vehicle fuel standard: report | Reuters

Maybe there is a new technology that will allow diesel engines to get that kind of mileage while hauling 40-50,000 pounds of produce. If not, somebody better get busy, since the majority of edible produce is moved by trucks.

Sometimes one has to be darned glad to live on a few acres and have the ability to grow his own vegetables, preserve his own fruits, and slaughter his own animals for family consumption. Wonder what those city folks would do if they went to the grocery store and the shelves were bare?

Riots?

Food riots would finish off what was on the shelves after just one strike by truckers. Many of these city people really don't know the truth about this and don't realize what would happen if truckers went on strike. It is against the law for truckers to do that but, as I said to one of them, what would happen if they all went on vacation the same week.

I really wonder how many people would figure out that the Obama administration and its EPA have hastened us toward just what you suggested.

There are always exemptions. That 56 mpg requirement will surely be for passenger vehicles. That will exclude anything that hauls pretty much anything. Currently even heavy consumer vehicles like the F250 and F350 (anything over GVWR 8500)don't get included in CAFE. Ever looked at the window sticker of a F350 for the EPA MPG? It says n/a because they are excluded.

One must realize that technology is wonderful, but it is doubtful that technology can increase the MPG for long haul truckers over 500% before 2025,....a little over a decade. In fact, it's doubtful even passenger automobiles can achieve that lofty goal.

Seems that both truckers and physicians are prohibited from striking. Maybe the federal government is hiding behind that prohibition as it continues to screw them to the barndoor with their regulations and laws.

Let the truckers stop for two weeks and you'll see people guarding their family garden plots with loaded guns.

I think that 2 weeks is a bit more than is needed. One week would bare the shelves of city food stores and would result in some real rioting. Maybe some in the Obama administration need to open their eyes.

It's amazing how many family farms are lost each day/week/month, either being gobbled up by corporations, sold to developers, or retired by the owner. Equally amazing is that no one seems to care. Apathy, coupled with more stringent EPA rules governing MPG, fuels, and farming guidelines, it's not difficult to see that a national food shortage is certainly possible.

As stated, there are some in rural areas who will fare better than those in the large cities, but going hungry is a distinct possibility.

You folks are beating a dead horse, untill you can get everyone out of the trucks nothing is ever going to happen. As long as people like living in a truck making 35 or 40 grand a year it is hopeless. Also there is allot that don't like it, but don't have the guts to do anything, so now what?

Yes, and this was breaking news back in June 2011. What month is it again?
