All infants are born atheist. If they lived their entire lives without knowledge of God, they would continue to be atheist: 'a' - without knowledge; 'theos' - gods. No "belief" is required.
Atheism is the belief that a deity does not exist.

A belief without proof requires faith.
Once again I'll ask, does it require faith to not believe in the tooth fairy? One believes there aren't any tooth fairies despite a lack of conclusive proof of their nonexistence.
I don't believe in Bigfoot. It's never been conclusively proven to me that there are no Bigfoot creatures in this world. Is my disbelief a belief that requires faith?
Bottom line, believing in the existence of something with no or inadequate proof is not equivalent to not believing in the existence of something despite lack of proof that it doesn't exist. All sorts of things don't exist, rationalism doesn't require that proof be given for their non-existence.
As for myself - raised Baptist, now agnostic. I don't believe any religion's claims about deities and don't believe in divinity of any scripture whatsoever.

Once again, atheism is the belief or doctrine that a deity does not exist [maybe you should look it up if you don't know this]. The atheist has no proof of his doctrine or belief. He has faith.
faith - the hope and trust, not proof, that one's belief system is true.
religion - a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe
Atheists hope and believe that their belief system is true. They only have faith that it is true because they do not have proof their belief is true.
