No. These pledges written not by the candidate may or may not contain the candidates own views. But the candidate is expected to adhere to someone else's ideas.
I would rather hear statements of policy from the candidate on individual situations than hear a blanket statement. More accountability.
no, pledges are stupid and hold you to something that you might not be able to deliver on.
I would think that all those campaign promises made by Obama that any fool knew he couldn't deliver on were much like what has been suggested here. So far the only one of his promises he has really delivered on is the transformation of this country and that is just started good.
I see no reason why they shouldn't be required to pledge certain things, since they could be held to those vows much easier than trying unelect them.

Accountability for a politician? Interesting concept! I wonder if it'll ever happen?
As I said elsewhere, this whole "pledge" stuff is ridiculous. Much to his credit, Huntsman has said he won't sign any pledges whatsoever. Pledges are utterly counterproductive except as a way to weed out the dogmatic ideologues who are unsuited to candidacy.
As was said above, politics is compromise. Politicians swear oaths when they take office and that's the only pledge I want to see them take. Serving the public and doing their jobs absolutely requires flexibility.
I think they're as abundant as political apologies and just as meaningless.
If they really don't mean what they are signing/pledging there will always be that crisis/extenuating circumstance after they are elected where they will have to go against their pledge. On the other hand, a broken pledge is written proof they're liars.
