Former first lady Betty Ford dies at 93 - politics - More politics - msnbc.com

I have only the vaguest memory of the Ford Administration (all I remember is the mock classroom 'vote' for President when I was in 2nd Grade) but Betty Ford seemed to be a decent person who broke ground with her openness regarding her addictions.

At any rate, she lived a long and very interesting life!

Thanks for those kind words. I hope there are more from everyone. Losing a loved one is hard.

The were and always have been my favorite occupants of the White House. Gerald Ford is the last major party candidate for whom I voted for Prez.

Betty married well.

Yes between being open about her breast cancer and addictions I would consider her one of the few first ladies that left a legacy of good works.

I, too, admired President Ford -- though only from afar in time. He was an interesting figure in that he never sought either the Vice Presidency or the Presidency before being thrust into those positions in 1973 and 1974, respectively, due to very unusual circumstances.

And, of course, his wife found herself going from the almost completely anonymous spouse of the House Minority Leader to First Lady in the space of less than ten months.

It must have been a very strange time for both of them, simply on a personal, non-political level.

On a side note, there are currently six living (former and current) First Ladies:

Rosalynn Carter
Nancy Reagan
Barbara Bush
Hillary Clinton
Laura Bush
Michelle Obama

An interesting and admirable woman. Married to a decent man, too. RIP.

Betty Ford came to our city (Corpus Christi, Tex) shopping mall back in 1976 to campaign for her husband. I remember my Dad saying that she was "drunk", a strange concept for a 12 year old to understand- you mean "First Ladies get drunk too?". She slurred her speech and took forever to make her way to the podium. Remembering that event, I have such an admiration for her that she came out and talked very frankly about alcoholism and was so instrumental in its treatment. I also remember TV shows in the 1970s that dealt with the stress of breast cancer mastectomies (All in the Family, Maude). I'm sure that this helped many women who were going through that ordeal. That kind of education would not have occurred without Betty Ford leading the way and making it her cause. We are saying goodbye to a true American hero. RIP Betty Ford.
