PLAIN and SIMPLE!

Those dang gays stole the rainbow too!......grow up!!!!

I also find it interesting how all the negative gay threads are left open on the board!

A better question is..... why are some straight people so obsessed over gays and issues concerning them!
Come on now...

I posted this mostly because given all of the beating of the same dead horse about "gay" questions, I posted something that was meant to be lighthearted and totally not relevant to most of the other threads.

Besides, if you've ever hung out in the world of guys in your typical high school, college, or bar-type setting, "gay" slurs and insinuations are tossed around like candy. Of course, if somebody is actually gay, the conversation changes entirely, and from what I've seen, some are hostile, but most are affirming.

Well I'm 53 and dont' remember anyone using the word "gay" to mean "happy". Don't get me wrong, it still DOES mean that and anyone can use it that way, but it's not like it was in vogue and then suddenly wasn't during the Clinton years or anything. I don't go around using the word "jolly" too often either.

I knew a couple girls named Gay and Gaye when I was growing up though.

Words mean what we know them to mean. The phrase "our hearts were young and gay" still means what it always has, and still inspires the same feelings, because we know what youth and happiness are all about.

"Marriage" is like that, as well. We know that it is the promise of a man and a woman to create a union and forsake all others -- regardless of what others may want it to mean.

Really? "Hijacked"? You must hold a certain level of hostility toward gays. Why is that? What have they done to you - other than make you feel afraid to use the word "gay" to describe your happiness?

Hmm. But are they censoring their words out of respect for gays, or is it out of a fear that there will be retribution if they say exactly what's on their minds? I'm sure it's the latter. If they truly had respect for gays, they wouldn't use the slurs in the first place, right?

It's getting harder and harder to debate online when the people posting are getting younger and I'm getting older. Sometimes I just read something and sigh...

Luckily I'm old, I'll be dead soon.
The world only started to exist when some people became aware of things.

Not at all. But you can't deny that throughout American society up until very recently (and still by many today) that "gay" has had a negative connotation about it. This is evidenced by when people say "insert activity here is gay" - it's not saying something positive about that activity. That's what I meant by "hijacked."

Most of the "slurs" aren't of the "I hate gays" variety. If people make those, they tend to get shot down quickly by their peers. The "slurs" are more of the "If you don't like some stereotypically male activity, you must be gay," or "If you don't drool over some hot female, you must be gay" type of thing. Sometimes you'll get the drunken bar bathroom stall writings saying "so and so likes to do gay activity here" kind of thing.

My guess is that it's so ingrained into our culture that most guys don't even realize they're doing it (and it is mostly guys making these statements; I almost never hear them from girls.) So I think there is a disconnect that most guys feel between not acting like a typical guy and being attracted to the same sex. Plus, most of these guys are completely affirming towards lesbians (assuming they're sufficiently feminine) and particularly bisexual women. So I'm not entirely sure how to describe it.
