The very basic idea of Socialism is to be a Social Democrat, and then a Democratic Socialist is even further left. However, there seems to be a gap between the ideologies of Democratic Socialists and the full on members of Socialist Party USA. What kind of Socialism would fill in that gap between the two ideologies/parties?

If we're talking about the United States of America - who cares.
I always thought my way of thinking would put me slightly to the left of center democrat who can see benefits to programs like universal health care, Unemployment insurance, programs to help the needy, free education.
If that makes me a social Democrat then so be it, but i really dont think that because of my position i should be referred to as some one who aspires to be a communist...

I would say that you'd be about there.
I've noticed that if a thread, such as this one, does not have anything controversial, then it doesn't get any attention. The people in the politics forum enjoy drama too much.

They sure do. It must be a love of argument. I know almost nothing about socialism, so I look forward to reading if you get any informed responses.
Socialism is such a bogeyman these days, but I would say very few of us would know how to define it in precise terms. The social impulse is in nearly all parties to some degree, except perhaps strict libertarians, but even they do not want to see privatization of the air and water.

Perhaps your question might be more adequately addressed if you outlined the what you believe to be ideological and programatic "gap" between the Democratic Socialist of America and the Socialist Party of America.
I'd leave it at a democratic socialist is a Democrat first and who is ok with some social/ist programs, a social/ist democrat is a socialist first with leanings toward democratic principles. which means i should revise my previous post to read Democratic socialist

Thanks, I should do that.

A Social Democrat is okay with Capitalism and tries to make programs to better the system etc. A Democratic Socialist opposes Capitalism and specifics can be tricky.
You are incorrect in saying that "The very basic idea of Socialism is to be a Social Democrat," as most Socialists find the Social Democrats to be Capitalists in disguise more than anything else.
