Mayor Emanuel lays off city employees - Chicago Tribune

Quote:
Mayor Rahm Emanuel is sending pink slips to up to 625 city employees Monday and privatizing many of their jobs to finish closing a $30 million budget hole, but union leaders said the mayor jumped the gun and never gave them time to negotiate.

So if even Rahm Emmanuel "gets it" that when there is no money the size and scope of government must be reduced, why doesn't Obama get it?

Because Chicago does not have its own currency, while the united states does. Chicago's dilemna is similar to that of Greece.

So, because the FED can print more money that is your explanation why Obama doesn't "get it"?

Well you said:

"when there is no money the size and scope of government must be reduced"

when it comes to the United States, that isn't true. We have the ability to create money by sacrificing our purchasing power. Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer.

Because Chicago isn't the entire United States.

Going to be interesting to see what the unions do when these pink slips go out.
Unless this is just a threat to get the union to concede some to balance the budget.

edit..I forgot today WAS Monday so he did it !!!

From the OP link..lol he gave them 2 weeks and the unions are balking that it was not enough time.
He certainly is running a tight ship there. Have to give him kudos on that. No idle threats like we're getting from DC.

"The mayor followed through on his threat to lay employees off because, he said, organized labor failed to offer concessions or cost-cutting ideas to close a budget hole left by the expiration of a deal with City Hall unions to take unpaid days off."It has been two weeks and despite ongoing talks between leaders of organized labor and my administration, none of the changes yet have been embraced or agreed upon," Emanuel said."

Actually they might get done now and for less money using private companies. If they don't do the work they get fired and a new firm gets hired. It's called "competition".
