Maybe everyone should reassess the screening process. Democrats.
True -- and one can be oblivious to the fraud that goes on until one sees it first hand.

That's why the liberal elites who reside inside gilded gated communities view the poor as helpless pitiful people who are on the edge of starvation, but those of us who live in the real world and actually know some of these people and encounter them in the grocery stores know the reality of welfare use.

When you see that the people with 2 heaping carts of brand name items and lots of junk food almost always use a food stamp card while those who carefully shop, put back items that will cost too much, bypass the brand names for generics, are using their own hard-earned money.

And those of us who know the welfare lazy are disgusted with them.

I feel sorry for the hardworking poor. Those who truly work their butts off to provide housing, food, clothing for their families but make too much to qualify for government benefits. I see people like this every day. They aren't sporting their Gucci bags, smartphones, or driving expensive cars and getting free health care, but they have to help pay for those "poor" people who do. Our "Poor" would be considered rich in most other countries.

I think there is an embarrassing problem people don't want to admit:

The TV Dinner (TM) changed everything. Boomers grew up with TV Dinners and other new convenience foods and never really learned to cook, which is why X, Y, and Millennials can't cook either.

Although the Millennials are reversing that since they grew up with Food Network and other foodie programming.

One of the great things about this country is that you don't have to excel - or even be particularly good at - many things. Excellence at one thing can make you wealthy. I've found a small niche which I believe will make me a lot of money, although it takes considerable time to get there.

Some of you may be familiar with the 'skill sheets' applicants are asked to fill out at temp agencies. They have a loooong list of job tasks - hundreds, really - that are found in office, industrial, and trade jobs. By their standards, I am remarkably incompetent. Fortunately, there are still many OTHER ways to make a buck, and I've found one I'm good at.

Is that really "poor" ?

Government has a dysfunctional definition of poverty which inexplicably does not take assets into account, and which is based on 1960s spending patterns.

Government sets the poverty line at 3 times the cost of an Economy Food Budget. How screwy is that?

Food is cheap, pasta, rice, etc. It should not be an issue.Start with simple recipes and move up from there.

We pay less for food than any other country and have more variety. It should not be a major part of this

conversation.Housing, energy, that stuff is prohibitive.

Just wait. There's wording in Obamacare that will set folks making $65K per year as poor. It was a boo-boo that no one caught; possibly because no one read the bill.

Except that isn't the case, did you even READ the report in the OP or just immediately have a knee jerk reaction?

That report never said when they bought the TV or Game System. They could have been bought earlier in their life when they were not poor they could have been gifts or they could have been bought at a yard sale for really cheap.
Ummm,it means they aren't poor,is having several color TVs necessary?
Cable?Game systems?

These things are things you buy one time. Buying one TV is not going to put in poverty the rest of your life.

So it is only in America where being not really poor makes them miserable...
Only in America do we want people to live the lowest standard of life possible instead of helping them improve their lives but that is the selfish greedy attitude many people in America have. I mean why not have people live in shacks since as long as they have a TV they are not really poor. People get jealous because they do not want the poor to have what they have(TV.Car). I mean how dare they they do not deserve that since they are not as good as me. It comes from pompus self entitled people who think that just because they have a certain job that makes them better and that people who do not have as good a job as them does not deserve much.

Nobody REALLY wants the poor to live in shacks. Specifically, they don't want the poor to live in shacks in their neighborhood. It's okay if the poor live in shacks somewhere else.

But since everyone doesn't want the poor to live in shacks in THEIR neighborhood, shacks are not permitted anywhere.

Therefore the poor are overhoused whether or not they want to be, and therefore spend more on housing than they prefer and have less to spend on other things than they prefer.b
