Default Obama Officially Backs Measure To Repeal Defense Of Marriage Act

Quote:
President Obama is officially backing legislation that would repeal the 1996 Defense Of Marriage Act, which prohibits the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriage even for couples married under state law.
Obama Officially Backs Measure To Repeal DOMA | TPMDC

Oh, this should make the social conservatives really angry!

I wonder what Michelle Bachmann and her gay husband will say about this.

.I see this as a good thing, it shows that Obama has decided to go against his prior beliefs to get votes which makes him very desperate or that he was a liar all along, either way it shows he's a flip flopper and very untrustworthy

Or, his experience being President and seeing DADT repealed (partially, anyway) and meeting service members who are gay has changed his mind.

Either way, I'm happy with his decision!

Red meat for the lefties. (are you reading this Mistygirl?! He loves you!)

He is just doing what Palin does in every single speech she gives. Firing up the base!

Didn't we have a thread last week about how areas with gay marriage have lower divorce rates than antigay areas?

Maybe Barry O. got the memo!

Besides, since when does another person's marriage affect yours? Oh, yeah, right.......LIBERTY, FREEDOM....the straight, god fearing, fornicating, adultering, divorcing, and morally superior consersvatives get to decide who gets that....

Pharisees....If Jesus came back tomorrow, he'd be hanging with the gays, just to rock your world.....and it would be a hell of a party!

It also shows he's desperately pandering for votes. There is a significant portion of his base that does not agree with same-sex marriage. Maybe he figures the gamble that they will vote for him again based on color alone is worth the risk?

I suspect that means it is yet another way to destract the American public from the wars, debt, economy, and unemployment under Obama's first 2.5 years.

From the link:
The Obama administration in February announced that the Department of Justice will no longer defend DOMA in court.

Question: how can a President decide that a law will no longer be enforced eventhough it is still in effect? Wouldn't a law repealing that first law have to be passed first? Is the Department of Justice beholden to the whim of the executive branch or a defender of the laws of the country?
