Am I missing something here. This report is awful journalism. The headings scream how this girl was denied the honor of being Valedictorian. Read on and see the compaint is that she had to share the honor. She was named co-valedictorian, big diference no?
It also paints the picture of "a predominantly white school", to infer she was in a small minority. Then the article mentions the student body is 46% black.....Sounds pretty diverse to me.
Maybe she was wronged here, but wouldn't you like to know what the person named co-valedictorian did to merit the honor before demonizing these people.
A high school southeast of Little Rock would not let a black student be valedictorian though she had the highest grade-point average, and wouldn't let her mom speak to the school board about it until graduation had passed, the graduate claims in Federal Court.
I surely side with this girl in her complaint but in reading your link I came across these quoted sentences in the body of their story. ***"school administrators and personnel treated two other white students as heir[s] apparent to the valedictorian and salutatorian spots."
*** "that he decided to make a white student as co-valedictorian"***
Seeing a considerable disagreement in those two statements I read the About Us part of the webs site and found that I really don't trust what they say to be real truthful.
You do see that one statement in the appeal says that two white students were appointed valedictorian and salutatorian spots but later on the complaint says that a white student was made co-valedictorian. I notice considerable conflict in those two statements so I have to question the source of your story. I think I can see a couple of possibilities about that source.
I got a kick out of that one but then I really got a kick out of the mother of the girl being named Bratton. Also, the part of the story about the girl being the mother of a child said a bit to me. Not that I give a damn about that part but some people really do.
It would be nice if at least one of the regular conservative CD posters here would at least give lip service to the idea that there would be something wrong with this if she were denied because of her race.
In the absence of a single comment to that effect, my own opinion of what the conservatives around here think seems to be confirmed.
It's common sense. It doesn't need to be stated. Anyone on here would agree, if she was purposely denied the title BECAUSE of her race, that would be wrong.
I saw in the article that she was a "young mother" or something to that effect and that got me thinking. Something else that got me thinking is that the mother is the media specialist. Does anyone not see how either of these things could create a "big mess" at the school?
Also, we don't know if she finished all her credits in time, we don't know if she was a year behind and thus was not graduating with her original class, we don't know anything about it other than the journalist's view (and the view of the girl and her mother) claiming racism.
What's so terrible about a black girl being smarter than all those bimbos?
I didn't read any reference to white bimbos in that article. Was there something there that said that or do you just consider white girls to be bimbos?
living in AR and being an avid reader of the paper, I am surprised there hasn't been any coverage of this yet, nor on public broadcast which we watch regularly...?????
Nita
Read some about the source that was linked to this story and maybe you can see some of what could well be happening.
So one school and one principal in the ENTIRE South is representative of all the South?
I guess when we throw this in with segregated proms, and trees that only white people can sit under, along with many of it's people wishing interacial marriage was still illegal, I guess one could draw some conclusions..

Are only white girls bimbos?
