These pseudo-religious "pledges" that he trumpets to the hills as the litmus test for a quality conservative candidate is the engine that's driving the irrational stubbornness of the Republicants in the House. Raising taxes shouldn't be routine, but declaring that you will not vote for any particular issue under any circumstances is ridiculous.

Moreover, we live in a country that has doubled in population inside of 2 generations. The idea that we do not need an increase in public services for our population despite this doubling of the members of our society is tantamount to a denial that mathematics is a true science.

The "pledge" did this. Norquist should be ashamed.

Who elected him, anyway? What does he know about government? Why are these people who signed his "pledge" so stupid?

well on one hand the pledge is pretty stupid, and it's hilarious how many idiots out there think of themselves as "hard workin' rich people who don't want to pay no more of them thar' taxes."

on the other hand, a population increase does not mean you ought to have a tax rate increase. that part makes no sense. We should have a tax increase on capital gains, and after that they can lower whatever taxes they please.

when you speak of doubling, do you mean since we have doubled in size we need to spend twice as much or double the % that we spend on these services you are so keen on?

the distinction is important.

No, the GOP is to blame. They signed the pledge Norquist developed while in High School. A teenage level understanding of the Economy. No, the fault goes directly to the "adults" that adhere to it.

Agree 100%.

I'm all for lowering taxes on earned income...we should avoid raising taxes on a doctor who makes 250K a year or a small business owner if at all possible, although the Bush cuts need to be repealed to help cut the debt.

Someone who draws a living moving money around shouldn't be paying less percentage of taxes than someone who actually works.

No, not exactly, but the fluctuation in our population and our population's needs does not seem to be part of the debate. We had a baby boom 60 years ago -- yes, more revenue will be needed, and less revenue will be coming in. This is a fact of life.

Our manufacturing base has been decimated, and the earning power and spending power of our middle class has been depleted, ergo revenue goes down, and more services are needed.

Infrastructure needs also increase dramatically -- and unless all the new people added to the population add corresponding add'l revenue, the math won't add up.

Faux News talking heads, the Tea Party and the Republicans all seem to think that "spending is out of control" and they depict it in a vaccuum, with absolutely no attempt to address our infrastructure and population needs (to say nothing of the 2 pre-emptive wars started while the GOP had complete control of the govt).
