And with most of the 18.4-cent tax per gallon of gasoline set to expire Sept. 30, renewing the tax could be the next political controversy to spark a brawl in an ever more deeply divided Capitol Hill.
Already, a handful of conservative groups are eyeing the expiration as the next potential front in the spending and tax fight — including Grover Norquist’s influential Americans for Tax Reform group — but are mum about any potential legislative strategy.
This is an issue handed to the GOP on a silver platter.
At the very least, this tax should be cut in half.
I didn't realize that a "gas tax" is set to expire... I guess since its set to expire, let it? Just like he is going to let the Bush tax cuts expire... right... when it comes to money, "expiration" means something completely different whether you are gaining money or losing money...
High gas prices affect all areas of our economy. They would be smart to let it expire and maybe revisit the tax when/if the economy ever recovers.
Yes, but the "fund" goes towards road projects across the country and the players are already whining how devastating, chaotic and horrible it would be to NOT renew the tax.

Yeah well, they need to learn how to do more with less. Just like the rest of us working stiffs. They will have a hard time convincing the public that higher gas prices are in our best interest. Then again, there's a lot of stupid liberals out there....

How well is this tax money used? Looking at the EPA as an example I shudder.
I am more inclined to favor toll roads. We are taxed to death already for roads.
As a non-driver, I'm torn on this issue. Gas taxes either need to: a. go away so that our transportation system can be privatized, or b. increased substantially to actually pay the full cost of what they are intended to support.
If the fuel tax is eliminated, then another way must be found to fund road work in this country. Fuel efficiency has already taken a big bite out of these disappearing funds. There is more use of the roads, but the greater usage is being accomplished on lesser gas.

Expired and tabled!!!
