I know some folks don't think the sun has any effect on our enviroment or climate and such but the Feds do... I just got the from our grid system dispatcher
**** Space Weather Alert ****
While NOAA has not issued a specifiic K or A Index Alert at this time, thought this was important enough to make this info available.
STRONG SOLAR ACTIVITY: For the third day in a row, active sunspot 1261 has unleashed a significant M-class solar flare. The latest blast at 0357 UD on August 4th registered M9.3 on the Richter Scale of Flares, almost crossing the trheshold into X-Territory (X-flares are the most powerful kind). The number of energetic protons around Earth has jumped nearly 100-fold as a result of this event. The eruption propelled a bright coronal mass ejections (CME) toward Earth. Moving at an estimated speed of 1950 km/s, this CME is expected to sweep up two earlier CMEs already en route. Analysts at the GSFC Space Weather Lab say the combined cloud should reach Earth on August 5th at 1355 UT plus or minus 7 hours
"Theimpact on Earth is likely to be major. The estimated maximum geomagnetic activity index level Kp is 7 (Kp ranges from 0-9). The flanks of the CME may also impact Stero A, Mars and Mercury/Messenger." High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras.

We are probably going to notice this with more obvious mundane things like cell phone coverage and Sirius/Satellite TV reception. This isn't good news for the Telecom/IT industry (probably others as well).
Three large explosions from the Sun over the past few days have prompted U.S. government scientists to caution users of satellite, telecommunications and electric equipment to prepare for possible disruptions over the next few days.
We have had no interruptions to speak of yet despite the OP's warning from the Fed.

The OP was overstated.
As a meteorologists, they were not nearly X class flares. They did have some moderate impacts with some intermittent disruptions in communications, as well as some amazing auroras. I do know that my satellite signal for my TV had several moments of fade during this time.
