The majority of mail is junk mail that is given reduced rates to be delivered. Stop the rate decrease and I bet you will drop the amount of mail by 40%. With the mail reduced I suspect you can reduce the number of employees at the postal offices.

they have become a company that has many people collecting healthy pensions when the service is becoming obsolete. It will be like paying retirement for the railroad men in the caboose. A service that isn't needed but it will take time to let all the retirees to die.

In fiscal year 2010, the Postal Service suffered a $8.5 billion net loss, compared $3.8 billion the prior year. Last quarter, the U.S. Postal Service posted a loss of $2.2 billion. Its fiscal year ends in September. Studies show that by 2015, it will be losing $20 billion annually. the decision to close 3,700 post office branches will only fix 1% of the problem. (saving 200 million)

the postal service has gone to congress to request layoffs.

Postal Service urges Congress to allow layoffs, cut benefits (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Postal-Service-urges-Congress-cnnm-1438592944.html;_ylt=AifZFp.hj5PkQkp0drpxi3.7YWsA; _ylu=X3oDMTE1aGo0Ym9oBHBvcwM0BHNlYwN0b3BTdG9yaWVzB HNsawNwb3N0YWxzZXJ2aWM-?x=0&sec=topStories&pos=1&asset=&ccode= - broken link)

Hundreds of thousands of postal workers could soon lose their jobs, or face drastic changes to their benefits. According to documents obtained by CNNMoney, the United States Postal Service is appealing to Congress to remove collective bargaining restrictions in order to lay off 120,000 workers. It also wants congressional approval to replace existing government health care and retirement plans.

The post office claims it needs to eliminate 220,000 positions, or more than 30% of its staff by 2015, but only 100,000 of those positions can be made through attrition. The other 120,000 must come from lay offs, according to the documents. "To restore the Postal Service to financial viability, it is imperative that we have the ability to reduce our workforce rapidly," the USPS wrote.

Having to fund their entire pension obligation in 10 years is crushing them. Extend it to 20 years and they are making a profit. There is more than enough money in their funf to pay its obligations. It's like they told you that you have to pay off your mortgage in the next five years

Exactly. And how many people (or companies) could do this monumental task and still keep going with their usual expenses and duties?

Like everything else, it seems, just let Google do it:

The USPS should be an enabler of digital communications, rather than a provider, said various speakers and delegates – opening up its platform for independent developers to benefit and benefit from the platform, as has been seen in Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android platforms.

Google reveals what it would do running the Postal Service | Post & Parcel

My Dad was a letter carrier for over 30 years starting in the late 50s, and we kids got an earful every night when he came home from work about how bloated and incompetent the USPS was THEN.

we all knew this was coming. digital technology has been transforming the way we communicate. the faster we communicate the more we progess. remember the old slang term for USPS is snail mail. horses are not being used today to deliver messages. continuing to keep afloat a dying horse is a waste of money.
