U.S. Postal Service Warns It Could Default (http://news.yahoo.com/us-postal-warns-could-default-222059604.html - broken link)
The government's mail service said it lost $3.1 billion in the period from April to June. As a result of its mounting losses, the U.S. Postal Service said it would not be able to make a legally required $5.5 billion payment in September to a health-benefits trust fund.
Let's see now:
Maybe do away with Saturday snail mail delivery
Maybe deliver the snail mail only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays
Maybe turn mail delivery over to a delivery service like UPS or Fed-Ex
When was the last time you wrote a letter and mailed it in an envelope (like they did in the olden days)?
How often do you pay bills by mailing a check (like they did in the olden days)?
When was something important delivered to you by U.S. mail that couldn't have been delivered by UPS or Fed-Ex?
I probably use six stamps a year, at most. I bought 100 'Forever Stamps' many years ago...and they will probably last me forever!

They overpaid in benefits even knowing that future revenue was going to be down by a LOT... which political party does something like that? And why would anyone think this would last forever...
I actually write letters at least 2 or 3 times a month which isn't much but I find it much more personal than e-mailing. I am 26 and sometimes a bit old-fashioned about how I interact with other people.
I use the USPS quite frequently, from paying bills to sending paperwork. That being said, at least 2x per week I get a delivery that really boggles your mind as to why they even bothered. A Pennysaver circular with a chinese restaurant menu in it really doesn't seem like it would pay the salary of the mail carrier.
I would have no problem with cutting out Saturday delivery. Maybe even cut down to 3x per week to eliminate needing fill in workers and to eliminate overtime.
They need to do what they need to do.From the drop in mailings three taimes a week is looking to match the need.
