Have we defined the enemy?
When do we know when it is truly "Mission Accomplished"

How $#%^! long are we going to stay there??

Two totally different wars. We had to respond to 9/11, hence the war in Afghanistan. Is it winnable? Of course not. At some point, it'll be time to declare victory and get the heck out. The war in Iraq, on the other hand, was as pointless as George Bush's presidency.

I agree with this. And it is impossible to discuss Afghanistan's progress without remembering we detoured into Iraq for what turned out to be NO reason. And now that Bin Laden is gone, I see NO reason to be in Afghanistan other than the "we broke it, we bought it" line of thinking.

The whole last ten years make me do this and this and this and this

The question of why we are still in Afghanistan becomes more urgent in the post-Bin Laden world when we see terrible tragedies like the 31 special forces soldiers who died in when their helicopter was shot down yesterday. The elite soldiers who died yesterday are some of the best our armed services have to offer. A terrible price to pay in this decade-long "war." If we can't declare victory now and bring all of our troops home, when can we?

Seems to be a good way to keep our military at top preparedness. We should probably always have a war going on somewhere. It makes for a pretty good public works project. Things were pretty bad after Vietnam and before the Gulf War.

No, it can't be won because were fighting different wars. We are fighting a "terrorist threat" where they truly believe there fighting a religious war. The only way to "win" is to hit the big red button and nuke them off the planet. Those people have been at war since Jesus walked, nothing the US or any other country can do will stop it. Aside from the Nuke of course.

I think we're too afraid to do what it would actually take to win a war anymore. There was a time when we actually fought wars to win. How many bumper stickers have you ever seen saying "Victory in Iraq!" or "Defeat Radical Islam!"? No, all you see now are "support our troops" and other such non-commital sentiment. Our soldiers are often seen as victims or pawns, not potential victors. We can actually win any war now with the push of a button but it wouldn't be considered polite.

We'll be down to a minimum force in Iraq by December (10,000 tops) and the same in Afghanistan by 2014. That's just the way it is. Get used to it.

How about a war in your home town? I'll bring the weapons.
