Okay, so I can see that you all hold static opinions based on only a few chosen sources and you're mostly unwilling to consider any other sources or a contrary viewpoint--and therefore I have no reason to continue in a discussion among people who have everything figured out.

I'm out!

Sounds like you're just repackaging your arrogance and not doing it very well.
No, the importance is that people actually behave and act based on their perceptions. Your perceptions seventy years later do not count. Read FIRST generation accounts of a time and you get a very very different picture than that of one which had been filtered through multiple interpretations.

Japan wanted and empire. It was going to get one. The people in their way did not want to be part of that empire. Regardless of why, we were not going to let them. That was the perception OF THE TIME.

And my dad was in the pacific and didn't tell me anything, but I know there is a very good chance that if he had had to invade Japan, I would not have been born. Many on his board would never have been born. Watch the WW2 in Color specials and see why perhaps the men of the time didn't really want to dredge up the uglyness into the next generations lives since I'm pretty sure they never forgot.

It was not everyone's perception at the time. Most Republicans knew that they were being taken for a ride and that FDR lied us into a war. Herbert Hoover knew; Claire Boothe Luce knew; the America First Committee knew. On the other side of the pond, C.S. Lewis knew.

There is not so much a disjunction between perceptions in 1941 and perceptions in 2011, as there is a disjunction between people of a skeptical temperament (then and now) and drooling proles who like being spoon-fed government propaganda (then and now.) You can find both types of human being in any period.
