Your interpretation is most definitely a reflection of current times and the time period in which you came to age. How are you able to understand a past time period any better than an academician who has trained in their field for years?

No, the importance is that people actually behave and act based on their perceptions. Your perceptions seventy years later do not count. Read FIRST generation accounts of a time and you get a very very different picture than that of one which had been filtered through multiple interpretations.
Japan wanted and empire. It was going to get one. The people in their way did not want to be part of that empire. Regardless of why, we were not going to let them. That was the perception OF THE TIME.
And my dad was in the pacific and didn't tell me anything, but I know there is a very good chance that if he had had to invade Japan, I would not have been born. Many on his board would never have been born. Watch the WW2 in Color specials and see why perhaps the men of the time didn't really want to dredge up the uglyness into the next generations lives since I'm pretty sure they never forgot.
