I have visited the Lincoln Museum in Springfiield, Illinois at least 3 times, and am struck by the similarity of the political critisizim and commentary of that time, and it's resemblence to the the political commentary of today, regarding President Obama. I have to wonder if, in another 100 years, assuming that the U.S. survives, he will be considered one of the "best" presidents.
Lincoln imposes first federal income tax: Aug. 5, 1861
On this day in 1861, in order to finance the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Revenue Act, imposing the first federal income tax in U.S. history.

One thing is for certain... Bush never read Lincoln's biography.
Actually, that is untrue. Bush is an avid reader.
I cant' believe, tho, how a thread can be about Lincoln and someone will still find a way to bring up GWB. Dang. He is no longer Prez, in case you folks haven't noticed.

Where Lincoln succeeded was that time gave way to enough time for the North to out produce the south. The war had to be long and drawn out. He held onto re-election because there were hardly any Democrats left in the house or Senate, they mostly left with the south.
His success in winning the war was what made him great, and it could be that in 40 years if the economy turns around on Obamas watch, he will be seen as a great leader.
Time will tell. If we had found WMD's in Iraq, do you think that George Bush's legacy would have been different? I think so.

Obama seems not have noticed...he still blames everything but his golf handicap on Bush.
As to the OP's observations, I'd say the comparison is more apt between Lincoln and Bush.
History just seems to keep repeating itself. People were willing to destroy the country for political power back then, as they are now as well. Shameful.

Well, neither is Lincoln, so what is your point?
Bush's failed policies and legacy also lives on...unfortunatley.
I did post a link to a Lincoln policy, so quit whining.
