"Workfare" would have the government taking jobs from the private sector so no they shouldn't be working for their benefits, I'll bet the 88% of you that voted yes didn't think of that. What they need is their own job.

they can help with all the increasing "charity" work that is now needed.

they could volunteer at hospitals, food kitchens, shelters, animal shelters, road crews, planting trees, building a border fence, etc. people could pick the areas that they would most like to make a difference.

if everybody was INVESTED in this country there would be more appreciation of this country and more satisfaction with helping each other out.

doing good IS a reward and when people realize it we will ALL be better off.

......and what happens is both the public and private employers suddenly realize they have an enormous supply of very cheap labor and don't hire regular workers. Public entities would be giving the work to the "workfare" force instead of private companies because it's cheaper. It's not a slippery slope, it's a cliff.

If you wanted to do something like this you could make it truly voluntary, it would certainly look good on resume for real job.

To continue in this vein, they should be doctors and nurses and other health professionals for medicaid recipients. Don't you guys get it? A lot of these people do not have the skills to do this work. They'd have to be trained, costing the govt. even more. A lot of them have dependent children, requiring govt. provided day care, etc.

Lol, I think if we implemented this policy, we'd see a major spike in disability claims.

My point is that all soldiers SHOULD be single and living on post until they are promted and make a career of it. It is selfish for a man or women to start a family on an ENTRY LEVEL military pay. I would say the same thing to a person who wanted to start a family and both parents earned minimum wage.

Many in my family "served" and none of them even considered marriage or a family until their enlistment ended.

Sorry the REAL world does not work that way and you last comment is not realistic for 90% of Americans.
